ThoughtMatter marks the close of each year with a holiday gift for our friends, collaborators and clients. It’s a gesture of our gratitude, a salute to the year gone and a charm for the one ahead. In 2022, we partnered with sisters Laura and Nathalie Viruly, artisans of handcrafted candles, to combine our talents in creating a gift that brings some warmth and illumination as the weather turns cold and the days shorten.

There are two ways of spreading light: to be the candle or the mirror that reflects it.

Laura and Nathalie, divided between Cape Town and Amsterdam, work together on one-of-a-kind, hand-poured candles. They play with abstract and engaging shapes, patterns and colors, transforming the traditional candle into a museum-worthy work of art. They never sacrifice functionality, however. For all the innovation, creativity and nonconformity that Laura and Nathalie’s candles display, they can always hold a steady flame.

ThoughtMatter has a parallel creative philosophy. Our work is fresh and unconventional but serves the practical needs of our clients. After connecting with Laura and Nathalie, we collaborated closely on the design and theme of our 2022 holiday gift. The result, Play With Fire, is a source of literal and figurative illumination. As the flame shines a light in your home or office, consider in 2023 what issues and causes have for too long been cast in shadow. We hope our gift will inspire you to confront the challenges of the new year with a fiery enthusiasm.
