Intern Perspectives

Coffee runs and mindless photocopying are not the makings of a successful internship. We work closely with our interns so they not only experience working on studio projects but are initiating projects of their own. We don’t just mentor our interns; we expect to learn from them too. We encourage their individual interests to gain new perspectives. We challenge them to show us how good work and great design allow us to see the world differently.

The Myth of
the Girlboss Zine

“Girlboss” has a certain purchase in modern language as a sometimes positive and sometimes pejorative term for high-powered women in business and politics. ThoughtMatter intern Naomi Desai wanted to look beyond the trendy label and engage accomplished women themselves in intergenerational conversations about professional goals, challenges and expectations.

As part of our Millenniheirs series, Naomi interviewed Elizabeth Talerman, Piper Hickman and Roanne Adams, three influential leaders in creative fields. Naomi recorded her thoughts, interviews and conclusions in “The Myth of the Girlboss,” a zine that will challenge your assumptions about what it means to succeed as a professional woman in the modern era.

Activism Zine

Recent college grad, Maya, and rising high school senior, Luisa, sought to demonstrate how design can inspire action to break down systemic racism. Maya designed a print and digital zine profiling three prominent New York City activists interviewed and illustrated by Luisa.

Period Privilege

SUNY Purchase student Niki Giokas and School of Visual Arts MPS graduate Carina Sandoval designed and built a website, stickers, pins and gifs to shine a light on the core human needs of menstruating people in the United States and provide a potential course of action towards equality.

Social stigma, high cost and lack of understanding mean that although half the world’s population experiences menstruation for most of their lives, only the privileged have access to essential period products and struggle to meet their needs.

It’s time to change the flow of resources. Menstruation should be equitable. Period.
